The Weekly Science Talk Radio Program

With listeners in over 60 countries worldwide
    Friday, November 30, 2001
Well I went and revised the website yet again. Got a pesky bee in my bonnet so to speak and decided brown was as they say "Not good." Anyhow we're still working on getting a better message board and getting our archives up to date. Good news is that the about us section is finally up. Also t-shirts and stickers. Something we've been pondering for a while now might just come to fruition. Look for more frequent updates regarding shows and general science news.

That being said I'm going to go ahead and tackle morals and ethics. Let me give you the background in case you missed this week's show (11/27/01). We spent a good deal of time talking about Advanced Cell Technology which announced they had cloned a human embryo - with the goal of harvesting this 6 cell cluster for stem cells. This has obviously caused quite a media stew around the whole topic and we debated with callers and amongst ourselves on the air. Kirsten, I believe, asked me the tough question of the difference between morals and ethics as they are used pretty much synonymously and were in our debates. I was naturally flustered and after reading a bunch have yet to arrive at a truly satisfactory answer on the difference, if any, between a moral and an ethic. I am inclined to say a moral is more often a specific rule with an ethic as a collection of morals, or rules. In any case I intend to fire off an email to one of the many learned professors in the UCD philosophy dept. to get a more detailed answer. Yes this isn't science I know but I was asked on the air and now I have to answer this. Besides it's driving me mad.
