You Wanna Copy of Celine Dion???
Sony's high-tech anti-pirating scheme has been dealt a blow by the lowly low-tech pen. The technology hides a data track on your music cd so that computer cd-rom drives will become confused. The computer attempts to read the data file first, and then continues to try to read the data file over and over again... never letting you get to the music. This data file has been placed on the edge of the cd. It seems that by blackening the shiny cd edge with a marking pen or covering it with tape, the cd magically becomes cd-rom friendly. Who woulda thunk it? Read more
here.
Post-script: Sony is warning cd users that such actions might result in damage to the cd or to your cd-rom drive.

A Moment of Silence
The world of science has lost a great mind. The author, evolutionary theorist and paleontologist, Stephen Jay Gould, died today. He spent his scientific life criticizing and championing the theory of evolution. He is known for helping to develop the theory of punctuated equilibrium, and questioning the evolutionary functionality of spandrels. His last book, "The Structure of Evolutionary Theory", was published in March. At nearly 1500 pages it was the culmination of his truly fine career. He will be missed, but his influence in the field of evolution and the study of science will be lasting.
