Fighting Fullness
Nutrition researchers at the Unversity of California, Davis recently published an article in the
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that details their study of the effects of fiber intake on fullness. It has long been known that eating a fiber rich meal will leave a person feeling full, but until now the reason why has been unclear. The researchers built their work upon previous studies of dietary fat intake. Those studies pin-pointed a hormone known as cholecystokinin (CCK) as the signal released from the small intestine to tell the brain that it is full. So, in this study, the researchers paired hi-fat, low-fiber; and low-fat, hi-fiber meals in order to determine whether fiber causes the same CCK release that fat does. Their results did indeed show that CCK is released in response to a hi-fiber diet, and may in fact be the hormone responsible for the feeling we call fullness.
