This Week on TWIS: Dan Falk and the Science of Shakespeare

June 30th, 2014

“A fool thinks himself to be wise, but a wise man knows himself to be a fool.” –Shakespeare

And, oh, we are fools here at TWIS. Fools for science!

Don’t miss some excellent foolishness this Thursday evening as we explore the world of Shakespeare with science writer, Dan Falk. His recently released book, “The Science of Shakespeare – A new look at the playwright’s universe,” explores the many ways that the first phase of the scientific revolution affected the bard and his craft.

This week we weave together science with its place in history, art, and culture. How much more foolish could we be???

Don’t miss it… the show starts at 8pm PDT on http://twis.org/live.

Support TWIS on Patreon

February 26th, 2014
Share

In the spirit of fundraising and remaining virtually ad-free, This Week in Science (TWIS) has started an account on Patreon.com.

What is Patreon? Well, it’s like Kickstarter for artists and media producers. But, instead of having one big campaign that ends on a particular date, Patreon takes into account the ongoing nature of art and media production. So, when you donate, you choose an amount that you want to give on an ongoing basis whenever we produce an new episode for you. For example, if you pledge to donate $5 per episode, at the end of a month you will be charged $20.

Very much like Kickstarter and other fundraising platforms, you will receive a gift from us in return for your support. We have created patches, new t-shirts, and could even record you a voicemail message!

If you love TWIS, all you need to do is head over to Patreon.com/ThisWeekinScience, and follow the instructions from there.

We are trying to raise at least $500 per episode in pledged support. The money will be used to buy TWIS new equipment, pay our bills, and give each of us a little something in our pockets for the work we do (personally speaking, money I get will be applied to childcare). If we are able to raise over $500 per episode, the monies will help support TWIS expansion. We would love to do more for science communication. We just have to get past the tipping point to make it happen.

You are how we hope to make it happen. Every little bit helps us reach our goals of informing and entertaining you.

So, if you do love TWIS, head over to Patreon.com/ThisWeekinScience right now, and pledge your support.

Thank you for your support. We really couldn’t do this without you.

TWIS 2013 Catchup Announcements!

Welcome Blair Bazdarich!

Blair Bazdarich
If you’ve been listening to the show (and you have, right?) then you already know this, but we’d still like to publicly welcome Blair Bazdarich, former TWIS intern, as our official co-host! For a year and a half now she has been an enthusiastic and invaluable member of the TWIS team, and as of her return from herd 6-month trip to Israel earlier this year, has become a permanent fixture. We couldn’t be happier, and hope you are too.

TWIS Live

Catching TWIS live has been difficult since we moved to Google Hangouts, and for that we can never apologize enough. But we can certainly start to apologize properly by announcing that https://www.twis.org/live is fully armed and operational. Head to that page every Thursday at … er, well, around 8ish PM Pacfic, more or less? (Kai-Time may be in effect, we hope you can understand,) and you can join us for the live show. And don’t forget to sign in to the IRC chat, right on the same page. If we aren’t live for some reason, that’s the best place to find out what’s going on. Hope to see you there!

This Is TWIS

This Week In Science (TWIS)

Kiki, Justin and Blair FINALLY met in person, all three together in the same place at the same time the other week, and somehow the universe didn’t end. They got some great photos that we’ll be featuring on the site soon, and they also took the opportunity to record a brand-new introduction to TWIS, which you can watch right here and find over on YouTube.

Don’t forget to click Like and favorite on the video, and of course subscribe to our YouTube channel!

Watch TWIS LIVE!

September 16th, 2013
Share

That’s right, people. You can watch TWIS when we broadcast.

Finding us used to be a bit cumbersome, but with the help of our brilliant minions, Arenlor and Ciphan, it’s now very easy to watch the live show. Oh, and, it’s easy to find our chat-room and be a part of the conversation.

Why?

Well, we now have a page for the LIVE show and chat-room… all in one!

Head over to TWIS.org/live on Thursday nights around 7:30 – 8ish PM PT. The video screen should auto-refresh, and start playing the show when we go live. In the meantime, hangout with the minions in the chat-room by logging into the chat-room entrance frame that’s located directly below the video.

The page is still in beta, so if things don’t start up when you expect, simply refresh the page to see if the show is on.

We hope to see you there!

Need recording of TWIS from 8/16/2012

August 21st, 2012

Hello Minions!

Unfortunately, we are experiencing a few bumps during our transition from TWiT.tv to an independent production. My recording of TWIS from last week did not capture all the audio, leaving us with an extremely incomplete audio file for the podcast. Additionally, there was a hiccup somewhere within YouTube, and the video of the broadcast is lost as well.

What this means is that I do not have an episode to release for the audio rss feed. I’m pretty bummed because it was a really good show.

So, if you happened to record the live feed, please let me know. I would be very appreciative of any help.

Many thanks,
–kirsten

TWIS adopts Google+ Hangouts and YouTube Live!

July 26th, 2012
Share

If you wonder what broadcasting solution TWIS decided upon since being ejected from the TWiT.TV studios, wonder no more. TWIS will broadcast live via Google+ On Air Hangout.

The upside to this is that it also streams though YouTube Live. So, if you are not a Google+ convert, you can remain gleefully unconverted.

How does it all work? Well, I will initiate a Hangout with the other hosts and guests at the usual time (7:30pm PT). The Hangout will be ON AIR, which means that if are a Google+er, and you follow me (+Kiki Sanford), you will be able to find the Hangout on the Google+ Hangouts page. If you are not a Google+er, you can find the stream either on the YouTube Live page OR on my personal YouTube page.

Now, you might also be wondering about the chatroom. TWiT.tv had a wonderful chatroom, and all these various viewing places don’t. So what are we going to do?

Make our own chatroom! You can join the conversation and the fun in the TWIS chatroom at webchat.freenode.net (if you are using a browser) OR at irc.freenode.net (if you are using an irc client). Just enter your nickname in the nickname field, and put TWIS in the channel field.

We’ve been through the whole process once so far, so hopefully most of the bugs are worked out of our system. But, please bear with us as we get used to this new platform.

Did I forget anything? What do you still need to know? Let me know!!!

Thank you so much for standing by us as we go through this transition!

Regarding the rumors of Cancellation

June 19th, 2012
Share

This past Sunday, upon my return from a much needed vacation, I found that I had received several communications wondering if TWIS was cancelled. Not understanding where the rumor had started, and a bit confused from my recent sun, surf, and sand infusion, I investigated.

It turns out the rumors are both true and untrue, as rumors will tend to be.

The rumors were probably ignited when the TWIS.org website went down sometime within the past two weeks. I wasn’t aware of the problem until my return, and fixed it as soon as I was able. For those interested, something triggered Apache service on the server to shut off. Simple problem, but a pain since I wasn’t around to fix it.

Then, rumblings began about a week ago about Leo saying that TWIS was cancelled. I spoke with Lisa Kentzell, CEO of TWiT.tv, today about the topic, and was informed that TWiT is restructuring. Part of the restructuring involves no longer supporting 3rd party shows, of which TWIS is one. As many of you already know, TWIS is my program, and actually predates TWiT by several years. Technically, TWiT cannot cancel TWIS. They can, however, remove it from their schedule… which they have done.

So, what does this news mean for TWIS and all of you minions? The answer is that I don’t really know yet. I am considering options for continuing to broadcast TWIS on my own. Google+ offers a possible platform through which TWIS might easily and seamlessly continue. Alternatively, I might consider other platforms like Justin.tv and UStream.tv. I have Wirecast and can use it. We might think about moving to another network. Or, there is always the possibility that this signals the end for TWIS.

I have made no decisions yet, and would love your feedback and advice. TWIS is nothing without you! Whatever we do, I want it to be the best decision for the entire community.

For the time being, TWIS will continue to air on TWiT.tv on Thursday evenings at 7:30pm PT. We will probably do our last show on the TWiT network within the month of July. You will be kept in the loop, so expect to hear more from me here and on all the social networks where we have a presence.

TWiT has been an amazing home for TWIS over the past couple of years. The entire team at TWiT has been supportive and helpful in ways that can’t ever be quantified or, for that matter, paid back properly. I want to thank Leo for giving us a place in TWiT.tv’s lineup for so long, and everyone else for the hours of work that went in to making the show happen (especially our trainee engineers ;). From the bottom of my heart, I wish the very best to TWiT.
