James Webb is billions over budget, not millions as stated by your guest. In the end they gave a low ball offer and now they have to find a solution. (I for one think they should continue.)

24:20 How do you determine if something has moved backwards in time?
It depends which theoretical framework you are using.
For special relativity, you can draw a Minkowski Diagram.
In a Minkowski Diagram, objects are drawn as world-lines.
The world-line represents the motion of the object through spacetime.
Superluminal signals are represented by a left-moving world-line.
Example
For quantum mechanics, you can draw a Feynman Diagram.
In a Feynman Diagram, particles are drawn as lines representing a classical trajectory.
Particles with paths that move from right to left are traveling backwards in time.

25:20 I think the jury is still out on being able to produce a Tachyon.
You argue that any Tachyon produced would fly backwards in time, and miss the detector.
Kiki got it right, there are signatures for the presence of particles that we detect indirectly.
Were Tachyons to be produced in a particle collision, the missing mas would be a dead give away!
Such experiments have been conducted to search for Tachyons, which were found not to exist.

In any case, it is clear why Tachyons cannot exist in quantum mechanics or general relativity.
In GR, they would unavoidably violate causality, which means they must be excluded from the theory.
In QM, they represent a system’s instability, which is dismissed through tachyon condensation.

This is the wrong message to take away from Kepler.
We have found that multiple planets in stable orbits are common around other stars.
Before Kepler, this was not a given!
We have found that Sol has a fairly standard distribution of mass and metallicity.
Yes, the formation of an Earth is an unlikely outcome for a given star system.
You have to multiply this by the number of stars!
If you are going to answer the SETI question with “Earths are rare”, you need to be MORE QUANTITATIVE.
Based on the data coming in from Kepler, how long before an Earth is found?
I have not seen it done, but you predict the expectation value for this date by looking at the spread of masses and orbital periods.
We have already seen Earth-mass planets as well as planets with year-long orbital periods.
It’s only a matter of time.

This may only be a quirk of mine, but I have a difficult time listening to poor choppy audio. I don’t know how you could have fixed the interview with Joel R. Primack and Nancy Ellen Abrams, but I missed almost everything that they had to say because I was so distracted by the audio quality.
It might not be a bad idea to coach future guests on best practices to get clear call quality into the podcast.
