The following hour of programming contains science.

If you are allergic to science, science has a remedy.

If you think science is boring, science will reveal its wonders.

If you don’t know what science is, science has an answer.

If you are afraid of science, science will protect you.

If you question science and are skeptical, science invites your curiosity.

If science seems confusing, science can clarify.

If you think science is too complicated, science can be super simplified.

If science feeds your thirst for knowledge, fuels your imagination, and fills your brain with well-reasoned thinking, you’ve come to the right place.

Because we have all of that and more here on This Week in Science.

Some quick science news!

The Interview!

We want to welcome our guest, Dr. Steven V. Rouse, to TWIS. You can find him on the Pepperdine Seaver College website.

Dr. Steven V. Rouse is a professor of psychology, with an emphasis on personality and psychological assessment. He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and master’s degree in clinical/counseling psychology at Abilene Christian University before earning his PhD in personality research at the University of Minnesota. Professor Rouse has diverse research interests but is especially interested in personality characteristics that relate to a person’s religious beliefs and research on the statistical quality of personality tests.

We can make jokes about drinking toilet water, but really with clean drinking water shortages around the world, water-recycling is a very serious issue. Dr. Kiki, Justin, and Dr. Rouse flush out all the nuances of recycling water you’ll want to listen to again and again!

When Einstein formulated the field equations describing properties of spacetime… no one could have predicted how much we would learn from it.

Equations on paper, illustrate that matter tells spacetime how to curve, and curved spacetime tells matter how to move gravitation arising not as a propagating force but rather as a feature of spacetime itself.

The weight of objects on earth, your own weight
Due to your body traveling through warped spacetime

The predictions that fell like loose crumbs from these equations,
Gravitational lensing, Gravitational Redshift, Gravitational Waves,
Black Holes,
Time dilation,
Frame-Dragging,
A dynamic spacetime, either expanding or contracting the equivalence Principle.
Even the Cosmic Microwave Background distribution.

Were predicted as consequences of Einstein’s work and all have been confirmed.

At a time when the known universe was just the Milky Way galaxy,
A universe trillions of times larger was fundamentally figured out.

And while we don’t have all the answers yet, we do have a great place to start asking questions,
Right here on
This Week in Science!

Some quick science news!

The world is ready for a change!

Not ready in the,
stocked up on emergency supplies,
Packed a snack,
Plenty of water,
Extra underwear, sort of ready…

But in the stocked up on greenhouse gasses,
Melting ice pack,
Plenty of sea rise,
Extra heat, sort of way.

The tipping point has already happened,
The change is coming,
And while there’s not nothing we can do about it.
There is nothing we are currently doing that will be enough to avoid it.

The change is coming,
The future will be different,
Some islands will disappear,
Coastlines will be rearranged.

The changed climate will alter the survivability,
Of plants and animals,
Habitats will shift, relocate, transform,
and will establish new biomes.

With the change will come tremendous loss,
And unique opportunities for success,
As life finds a way,
Under a new climate landscape.

All of this has happened before,
And will happen again.
Only this time,
The modern human civilizations will be a part of it,
And our one chance to be ready for it depends on,
This Week in Science!

We’d like to welcome our guest, Dr. Emily Fischer, to TWIS. You can find her at the Science Moms website.

Dr. Emily Fischer is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU). She is also an affiliate faculty member of the CSU School of Global Environmental Sustainability (SoGES). When she’s not teaching, Dr. Fischer leads a number of initiatives designed to provide high-quality mentorship to the next generation. She has been awarded a Macelwane Medal by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in recognition of significant early career contributions to the Earth Sciences as well as the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Atmospheric Chemistry Committee Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award.

Emily is a mom of two daughters, ages 5 and 8. Colorado is home now, but she is originally from Rhode Island and misses the ocean terribly in the summer. She likes to paint anything — toes, canvases, furniture, etc. — and eat olives (any kind will do). She likes watching romantic comedies, reading books with her kids, and reading approximately half of each of the books chosen by her book club.

The Interview!

It’s time to reintroduce our guest this evening and get into the real bones of this particular show with our incredible guest, Michael Garfield. You can find him on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, or check out everything via his Linktr.ee.

Michael Garfield is a Paleontologist-Futurist and transmedia artist whose work helps people navigate our age of “global weirding” — and inspires the curiosity and playfulness we’ll need to thrive in it. As a painter and digital artist, Michael draws inspiration from his background as a psychonaut and scientific illustrator to create everything from murals to apparel, and body art to book and album covers. His multi-instrumentalist talents in music have opened hearts and minds across four continents, with his songs and fully improvised performances featured everywhere from PBS to COSM, Burning Man to Meow Wolf, and even peer-reviewed archaeology research papers to the Phase II & III MDMA human trials. Additionally, as an author, essayist, and internationally-charting podcast host, Michael remixes science, art, philosophy, and myth to foster vital conversations at the frothy edges of the known and knowable.
