Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

The world is going to hell in a handbasket but there are things we can do to prevent it.

We need the willpower that’s it, just the willpower to do it!

We can halt the rise of carbons in the atmosphere that threatens our cities, our food sources, and the intricate web of every living creature on the planet.

If we have the willpower to make some changes we can reduce gun deaths, homelessness, poverty, and hate if we have the willpower to make some changes.

We can overcome illness, manage pathologies, and cure diseases if we have the willpower to make some changes.

The changes aren’t impossible, they aren’t even hard the changes we need to reach a sustainable, healthy, secure future are already available to us!

We just lack the willpower to act, to do, to engage and actually, that’s not true, willpower has nothing to do with it.

We just lack the knowledge of how to act, how to do, how to engage and actually, again, that’s also not entirely true because we have the knowledge of how to act, how to do, and how to engage we know the outcomes of actions.

We know the outcomes of change.

And we know the outcome of the status quo.

If you’re not concerned with the threats of the status quo if you aren’t activated to do some form of activism if you are not interested if you do not care you have not been listening to This Week in Science.

An ocean of quick science news you can appreciate!

Cancer Remission
In a small study, all patients treated with immunotherapy for rectal cancer are in remission.

We’re in the bad place

Rock on!!! Life will be found everywhere
RNA spontaneously forms on basalt lava glass.

Zinc Poles
Zinc concentrations were essential to life in the polar oceans.

Ladies, always ask about your birth control
…cause your DR might not tell you… Some anesthetics have impacts on birth control, but many physicians neglect to mention it.

Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

On Memorial Day we are supposed to have been remembering the fallen soldiers of those who were called to serve and sacrificed all.
But instead, another massacre of children with an assault rifle has people remembering that the United States is the most violent place on earth.

14 mass shooting events over the memorial day weekend another one at a hospital in Oklahoma just today and as the yearly deaths by gun in the United States climb 45,222 in 2020 alone.

We are far exceeding our fallen soldiers in wars eclipsing the lives lost by our troops in 8 years of Iraq, 20 years in Afghanistan, and The Korean war combined.

In a single year.

Approaching every soldier’s life lost in the 20-year Vietnam war. Every single year.

And why?

Because guns are poorly regulated in the US. states that are well regulated, have the fewest deaths by gun. Gun deaths are higher in the US than anywhere else in the world. We use guns to commit homicide and suicide per capita more often than anywhere else on the planet.

Guns are the number one cause of death amongst children in the US.

Memorial Day is a day to remember our fallen.

We should remember who that is.

Even as we enjoy another episode of This Week in Science!

If there was an elephant in the room you would know it.

If the lights went out, you’d be keenly aware that it was still in the room.

If you felt for it in the dark you might identify a sturdy foot or a long sharp tusk, or you might not. You might feel a breeze from a fanning ear or be moved aside by a powerful trunk, or you might not.

But whatever you came in contact with, you wouldn’t forget the rest of it was there because if there were an elephant in the room you would know it every second that it was there.

There is an elephant in the room with you now.

Global warming.

You might feel it as a hot day, or you might not.

You may notice the lack of snow, or missing ice, or you might not.

You could take notice of unseasonable blossoms or untimely flights of birds, but you might not. You could be so attuned to looking past the bubbling froth of tidal foam, to see that the sea has risen.

Though likely… you have not.

Because a global event is very much like an elephant in the dark what you can touch, what you can feel, and what you can experience at any one time is limited by location, but still we know warming is happening everywhere at once and will not rest, and neither should we because there is an elephant in the room and we know we can’t wait to hear another episode of…

Religion

I don’t care which one, it really doesn’t matter the winged donkey rider, the winemaking street magician, the elephant-headed boy, the deadbeat dad navel gazer, the bearded old man telling mankind to get off his lawn, and sending a flood to kill them all…or any of the various ensembles of godly soap opera stars.

All the same to me, and as far as I can tell, functionally the same to anyone else as well, collections of stories, mixed moral messages, and conflicting logics, transformed into doctrines of social behavior that for the most part bear no relation to the texts from which they are supposedly derived.

And none of which should be considered at all relevant to today’s world because they largely manifested to serve medieval theocracies, and yet here we are in the land of separation of church and state, separated not just in the United States, but around the world as well there are a few places where theocratic rule still exists – Afghanistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia unless you are rich and that last vestige of colonial authority, Vatican City, and very soon, if we are not actively vigilant several of the less than United States of America.

What we are seeing happen already, in the rewriting of math and history test books, the rolling back of personal freedoms, the persecution of our LGBT+ communities, the elimination of sex education along with forced pregnancies regardless of age or consensual conception… is the introduction of theocracy to the modern world.

The world was once full of theocracies every nation was one. We gave them up for a reason. They are terrible, yet gaining momentum in the one place that has never been one.

And there is no greater threat to theocracy than… Science!

Science that answers big questions, that heals the sick, that invents technology, that allows near-instantaneous communication around the world, that lays bare the actual workings of the human body, the cosmos, and the very matter of the universe.

No matter what the origin story is, from which culture or whose religion, nationality, ethnicity, tribe or tradition anthropology can point to a mountain of evidence that proves that it is wrong.

As the fact-checkers of human history, anthropologists will have to be the next evolution removed from textbooks, biology replaced with creation myths truth, facts, data, and evidence, all contorted to conform to a theocratic narrative of the death of logic, the death of reason, and the death of applicable knowledge and the only thing standing in its way is…

Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

The supreme court of the united states has written a legal opinion to overturn roe vs wade joining a shortlist of countries which prevent women from having reproductive rights which include:

Egypt, Libya, Senegal, Iran, Afghanistan, El Salvador, Honduras, Philippines, Laos, Nigeria, and the popular pseudo-socialist right-wing boogie man Venezuela.

Now it is important to keep in mind that the legal shift would primarily affect states that have already passed laws to impose abortion bans should roe vs wade be overturned these include states like:

Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia to name a few.

All of which voted for slavery the last time that was a thing you could vote for in America.

Which isn’t completely fair seeing as that was over a hundred and fifty years ago and the confederacy only lasted for four years, and only some people in those states still claim the four-year fight for slavery as their heritage despite having a black president for 8 in very recent history.

Yet curtailing the rights of women, or LGBT communities, or minorities, or anyone else for that matter is a matter of deep-held cultural identity for some Americans, as ugly as that sounds and while some frame it as states rights giving the state the ability to impose restrictions on individuals is an act of taking rights away forcing women into essentially a legal contract to give birth is the sort of thing even most authoritarian governments feel is a bit much.

But maybe these laws, however misguided, are in some way out of a love for children. Let’s look then at how states spend tax revenue on parentless children.

California which definitely not going to outlaw reproductive rights spends three times as much as on children living in foster care than Texas which definitely will outlaw reproductive rights.

New York state outspends Texas as well, despite having only half the population.

Oregon spends twice what South Carolina spends on foster youth.

Washington spends three times what Mississippi spends despite only having twice the population.

Maryland spends three times what Arkansas spends, despite having half the population.

States that already have the greatest restrictions on reproductive rights, consistently underfund foster care systems, and also those happen to be states with the highest rates of incarceration.

Again and again, everywhere you look, the commitment to actual outcomes is missing the actual outcome of criminalizing reproductive choice will be an increase in youth at the greatest risk for incarceration. Incarceration that could find these children performing unpaid prison labor the likes of which exist today in states like Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas.

But keep in mind, these are again states that voted for slavery when they had the chance, which doesn’t seem so unfair to mention now.

So maybe they are committed to an outcome for children by suppressing the reproductive rights of women. But it isn’t one anyone should be in favor of.

The only thing you should be in favor of is more

Imagine a world without science…

Not a world of yesterday

But a world of tomorrow

A world where, all at once, while everyone was sleeping the scientists and teachers of the world simply walked away put down their pipettes, deleted their algorithms, and left their students to languish.

What then would the world of tomorrow look like?

If a generation of students had No math education, No biology, No chemistry, No logic, No critical thinking If research in every field simply stopped.

What then would the world look like in five years? In ten?

Global warming is no longer talked about as sea levels rise and wildfires burn, and the next pandemic goes unchecked. Economies are in ruins as hospitals staffed by untrained volunteers are overrun the history of the planet, in the hands of revisionists has always been authoritarian.

The environment, according to industry spokespeople has never been cleaner the next generation, uneducated, raised on propaganda unable to tell fact from fiction data, facts, truth, all replaced by spun narratives slick ad campaigns, and well-marketed conspiracy theories.

In short, the world would devolve into what it nearly is today.

And the only thing keeping us from this dystopian vision of a not too distant future? Is This Week in Science!

Some quick science news you can appreciate!
