Authoritarianism… is nothing new.
It rears its ugly head every half century or so…
Manages to persist malignantly in some places
Until it can be removed from power
What follows is a slow process of reforming society
around freedoms lost, truths forbidden, and progress towards peace and prosperity

At some point, the generation that suffered, fought, and overcame
the past authoritarian movement
Dies
collective memory fades

Struggles of modern life evoke nostalgia
for an age that never existed
At first, it is a form of escapism
An indulgence in magical thinking
An over idealised past
Stripped of all its failings

Power-hungry narcissists pounce on the opportunity
Readorn themselves in the pageantry of strong men
Promising a return to the mythical old ways as a path to the future
Arrogance, ignorance, and revisionism promenading as pride

Manufactured hatred is presented as a justifiable cause
Placing the failure of the world to be perfect
Upon the weakest, the most vulnerable targets
With increasingly divisive rhetoric blaming the others
All those others… so many others that it’s hard to see
Who would even be left if every other went away

Anyone who pushes back on the propaganda,
Who challenges lies with truth
Becomes a co-conspirator
Becomes another
Journalists, teachers, historians, scientists, comedians
It doesn’t matter who you are
If you are not licking the boot, it will be at your neck
Until you fight back
And fight we will, with…

Science tends to be irreverent of pre-existing beliefs.

Overturning the earth-centric universe with one that centers around the sun upset thousands of years of well-reasoned observations and many mythical contemplations later discoveries.

So that the sun itself is moving along a rural stretch of a spiral arm amidst billions of stars in the Milky Way galaxy and a universe brimming frothing even, with trillions of galaxies firmly upending any concept of humanity being at or even near the center of anything.

Archaeological anthropology has also gained an especially irreverent reputation, as there is scarcely an origin story of any culture on the planet that has not been amended or completely refuted by its findings.

Scientific irreverence also applies to the field itself. When new evidence emerges to question long-accepted interpretations, including those once presented as prevailing frameworks, science updates its knowledge, overturns those well-reasoned, well-founded assumptions.

Real knowledge is never gained by being right about anything. It’s earned through methodical seeking of truth, wherever it may lead. And seeking that truth is likely what led you here to another episode of This Week in Science!

No longer will we waste money on unlocking the secrets of the universe,

The wanton fraud of innovation,

The political bias of technology,

The unholy hubris of the human genome,

The pure grift of therapeutics based on science ends now,

For America…

Science will, of course, continue elsewhere in the world…

As America returns to its golden age of… not doing science?

But fear not, America!

We will continue to bring you the latest science news,
from whatever country is doing it
Right here on

When Einstein formulated the field equations describing properties of spacetime… no one could have predicted how much we would learn from it.

Equations on paper, illustrate that matter tells spacetime how to curve, and curved spacetime tells matter how to move gravitation arising not as a propagating force but rather as a feature of spacetime itself.

The weight of objects on earth, your own weight
Due to your body traveling through warped spacetime

The predictions that fell like loose crumbs from these equations,
Gravitational lensing, Gravitational Redshift, Gravitational Waves,
Black Holes,
Time dilation,
Frame-Dragging,
A dynamic spacetime, either expanding or contracting the equivalence Principle.
Even the Cosmic Microwave Background distribution.

Were predicted as consequences of Einstein’s work and all have been confirmed.

At a time when the known universe was just the Milky Way galaxy,
A universe trillions of times larger was fundamentally figured out.

And while we don’t have all the answers yet, we do have a great place to start asking questions,
Right here on
This Week in Science!

Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

The world is ready for a change!

Not ready in the,
stocked up on emergency supplies,
Packed a snack,
Plenty of water,
Extra underwear, sort of ready…

But in the stocked up on greenhouse gasses,
Melting ice pack,
Plenty of sea rise,
Extra heat, sort of way.

The tipping point has already happened,
The change is coming,
And while there’s not nothing we can do about it.
There is nothing we are currently doing that will be enough to avoid it.

The change is coming,
The future will be different,
Some islands will disappear,
Coastlines will be rearranged.

The changed climate will alter the survivability,
Of plants and animals,
Habitats will shift, relocate, transform,
and will establish new biomes.

With the change will come tremendous loss,
And unique opportunities for success,
As life finds a way,
Under a new climate landscape.

All of this has happened before,
And will happen again.
Only this time,
The modern human civilizations will be a part of it,
And our one chance to be ready for it depends on,
This Week in Science!

The Interview!

We’d like to welcome our guest, Dr. Emily Fischer, to TWIS. You can find her at the Science Moms website.

Dr. Emily Fischer is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU). She is also an affiliate faculty member of the CSU School of Global Environmental Sustainability (SoGES). When she’s not teaching, Dr. Fischer leads a number of initiatives designed to provide high-quality mentorship to the next generation. She has been awarded a Macelwane Medal by the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in recognition of significant early career contributions to the Earth Sciences as well as the American Meteorological Society (AMS) Atmospheric Chemistry Committee Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award.

Emily is a mom of two daughters, ages 5 and 8. Colorado is home now, but she is originally from Rhode Island and misses the ocean terribly in the summer. She likes to paint anything — toes, canvases, furniture, etc. — and eat olives (any kind will do). She likes watching romantic comedies, reading books with her kids, and reading approximately half of each of the books chosen by her book club.

Dr. Kiki and Dr. Fisher get atmospheric in this fun interview you’ll want to listen to again and again!
