Science is magic.

Now, you may not believe in magic.

Think that it’s just a trick or an illusion.

But science is magic.

Magic is based on fooling the audience into a misbelief by sleight of hand or misdirection, a pre-planned switcheroo.

In magic, the outcome seems impossible.

Defying gravity, time, or space until you learn how the trick is done.

And then it just all kind of makes sense.

Unbelievable tricks of all sorts have been accomplished by science.

The modern world would seem entirely magical and unbelievable to someone living just a half-century ago.

Science is magic in that as soon as you learn the methods behind it, you remove the misdirection from your mind and can see clearly that the seemingly impossible outcomes were all in your head.

Now for our next trick, we will make the next ninety minutes disappear
with This Week in Science!

Some quick science news!

When humans do things, they don’t always know why.

They wake up, knowing it is because of an alarm.
They eat because of the time, or due to hunger.
They bathe, brush teeth, and dress themselves appropriately for the day, or the night, with an eye on the weather.
They work, because if they didn’t there would be consequences.
And they sleep because they know they need to be well rested
before the alarm goes off again…

Humans are of course slightly more complicated than this
But the essential human attributes these days
Consists of lists of necessary routines that
While they may be aware of needing to do them
They might not always know why

Some of the humans regularly tune into this show
Where they jump into a conversation
About recent research, filling their heads with science-y news

But do they know why they do this?
Or do they only know that if they didn’t
They wouldn’t know what they are not about to miss
Here on
This Week in Science!

Some quick science news!

Are we surprised that glyphosate continues to give us bad news?

Immune or Nervous?

Muscle Molecules
Will we be able to build muscle without working out one day?

There is something disruptive taking place in science.

Something that is already altering the pace of research.

New predictive models for protein structures are turning months of research into just hours.

Whole genome analyzers that can identify single nucleotide variants in just minutes. Gene therapies that rewrite faulty human code, stem cell treatments that reverse the effects of aging, diseases once untreatable becoming manageable, and the manageable ones becoming cured.

Our understanding of everything is being disrupted by more and more knowledge.

Better knowledge, better tools, better medicine, better life.

But there is one thing that is unfortunately not getting

One thing upon which we cannot improve.

One unchanging fact that no matter how we might try, continues to remain the same.

Despite all of our knowledge, we still want more This Week in Science!

When Einstein formulated the field equations describing properties of spacetime… no one could have predicted how much we would learn from it.

Equations on paper, illustrate that matter tells spacetime how to curve, and curved spacetime tells matter how to move gravitation arising not as a propagating force but rather as a feature of spacetime itself.

The weight of objects on earth, your own weight
Due to your body traveling through warped spacetime

The predictions that fell like loose crumbs from these equations,
Gravitational lensing, Gravitational Redshift, Gravitational Waves,
Black Holes,
Time dilation,
Frame-Dragging,
A dynamic spacetime, either expanding or contracting the equivalence Principle.
Even the Cosmic Microwave Background distribution.

Were predicted as consequences of Einstein’s work and all have been confirmed.

At a time when the known universe was just the Milky Way galaxy,
A universe trillions of times larger was fundamentally figured out.

And while we don’t have all the answers yet, we do have a great place to start asking questions,
Right here on
This Week in Science!
