Nature is a beast.

One that we often assume has long been tamed. Man Vs. Nature a mere trope of ancient storytelling.

We know that nature has not actually been tamed but it is better understood. While nature is still a beast the brunt of the beast is avoidable. We know when and where severe severe weather will strike.

Disasters of nature are therefore now man-made. Building in the path of hurricane, tornado, or earthquake-prone places is our doing, not nature’s.

Scientists have warned us the methods we have relied on to fuel our economies, our cars, our homes, and our agriculture have consequences.

Science has even given us the tools to predict storms and to track them. To give us time to act, to engineer, and to evacuate.

And as a fierce hurricane hits Florida again, millions are fleeing ahead of the danger and millions are still there seeking higher ground and out of the storm’s path. We hope they are able to stay safe.

Avoid the immediate danger and when conditions change for the better when the storm has passed, reflect on a future where such events become more common, not less. More destructive, not less.

And heed the warnings of science to mitigate the outcomes of extreme weather and the best way to keep yourself updated on the future?

And, now for our Interview!

INTERVIEW W/ Dr. Steven Novella

Dr. Novella is an academic neurologist at Yale University School of Medicine. In addition to being the host of The Skeptics’ Guide podcast, he is the president and co-founder of the New England Skeptical Society, a fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (CSI), and a founding fellow of the Institute for Science in Medicine. He is also a prolific writer, blogging at NeuroLogicaBlog, and Science-Based Medicine, co-author of best-selling The Skeptics Guide to the Universe, and now he has co-authored a new book with his brothers The Skeptics’ Guide to the Future.

In The Skeptics’ Guide to the Future, Steven Novella and his co-authors build upon the work of futurists of the past by examining what they got right, what they got wrong, and how they came to those conclusions. By exploring the pitfalls of each era, they give their own speculations about the distant future, transformed by unbelievable technology ranging from genetic manipulation to artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Applying their trademark skepticism, they carefully extrapolate upon each scientific development, leaving no stone unturned as they lay out a vision for the future.”

Most of what humanity does on a daily basis is nothing new.

The trash will be picked up.

The roadways, sidewalks, and transit stations will fill up and empty out again.

Workers will put in a day’s work.

Papers will be filed, potholes filled, information will flow and transactions of all sorts will take place.

Guests will be welcomed, food prepared, and conversations will fill the air.

The daily chores will be checked off… mostly.

Parents will put their little ones to bed.

Students will study.

People will sit down to watch the latest version of ancient story archetypes this time with robots, or dragons, or in space with robot dragons. And everywhere around the world, another day will pass as so many have passed before.

We live in a world of our own making one of order, routine, and safety where we can maintain it.

We repeat ourselves in conversations, in activities, and in mistakes.

Doing so much of the same things over and over again that, even now, just talking about it becomes redundant.

There is one thing we do that, while routine in its execution, can lead us down paths we have not traveled before… Science

Science is the one avenue of human activity that makes new discoveries where the call of the explorer, to seek the unknown adventure is still being met by the pioneers of research and every day brings something new.

You might even say there is always something new under the sun or that the more things change, the more they get talked about it here on

INTERVIEW W/ Dr. Bryn Nelson

Dr. Nelson has a Ph.D. in microbiology and is a Seattle-based freelance writer and editor with an avid interest in biology, biomedicine, ecology, green technology, and unconventional travel destinations. You may have seen his byline in publications like the Newsday, NY Times, Scientific American, or now on the cover of his book, “Flush” The remarkable science of an unlikely treasure.

‘The future is sh*t: the literal kind. For most of human history, we’ve been, well, disinclined to take a closer look at our body’s natural product—the complex antihero of this story—save for gleaning some prophecy of our own health. But if we were to take more than a passing look at our poop, we would spy a veritable cornucopia of possibilities. We would see potent medicine, sustainable power, and natural fertilizer to restore the world’s depleted lands. We would spy a time capsule of evidence for understanding past lives and murderous ends. We would glimpse effective ways of measuring and improving human health from the cradle to the grave, early warnings of community outbreaks like Covid-19, and new means of identifying environmental harm—and then reversing it.’

The future.

It isn’t here yet.
We can’t know for certain what it will look like.
Or what it will sound, smell, or taste like…
While we can almost touch it
The future is always just out of reach.

Still, one of the things humans are famously good at is planning for the future.
Stocking up for winter, planting seeds in spring, investing for the future.
It’s what separates us from fish, apes, and fruit flies who famously are terrible at farming.
Though stock selections by captive chimpanzees typically beat wall street financial speculators.

The future, despite all of its not existing yet…
Is the one thing we all rely on when making decisions.
When we fail to consider the future,
When we attempt to ignore it
It has a strange way of happening anyway
Often with unforeseen consequences
More often with super foreseeable consequences

Because while the future is a mystery
The past and present are not.
And at present, we are setting the future up for some very challenging consequences.
And at present, science is working hard to overcome the problems of the present
Problems that, if science is successful, won’t follow us into the future.
What new problems will we have?
What old problems will we forget where a thing?
Future spoiler alert

It was us.

How it was done?
Relentless unregulated carbon release.

Why it wasn’t stopped?
Financial interests blocking legislation through lobbying and misinformation campaigns

How bad is it? Pretty darn bad.
Thousands of scientific studies have quantified the degree to which we have already altered the climate, and committed to changing it for years to come.

What are the consequences? Really really darn bad.
Thousands of scientific studies have made increasingly dire predictions based on current observations and a deep understanding of the past, including mass extinction events.

What still remains a mystery is how anyone considered a stakeholder in the outcome of the planet’s habitable stability would continue to obstruct or deny the changes urgently needed.

We have one planet. A good one. The best we’ve ever seen. And we should do everything in our power to keep it that way. As earthlings, as humans, as the most sentient living creature, the universe may ever know caretaking for our planet is the most sacred duty we have.

Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

Your mind is made up.

It’s made up of physical-biological squishy stuff that came to be over millions of years of evolution…
Giving you the ability to process information from the world around you through your senses,
as it operates biological functions automatically.

It’s made up of thoughts, language, and memory giving you the ability to wonder aloud and eventually find where you left your keys.

And it’s made up of interests things your mind seeks out in the world beyond its squishy confines

While your mind is made up of many things we recommend one more make your mind up with science like a highly refined sixth sense, science allows you to process information not readily available to senses alone and there is no better place to make up your mind then here on This Week in Science!
