Disclaimer, Disclaimer, Disclaimer!!!

We are about a week away from the Celtic festival of Samhain.
A celebration welcoming the harvest at the end of summer.
Usually held around November 1st,
Marking the transition from summer to winter.
Fall had apparently yet to be invented.

During Samhain, people dressed in costumes and lit bonfires to ward off ghosts.
They believed, or participated in a tradition, that the souls of the dead
returned to their homes on that day.

We know it today as Halloween.
Or all hallows eve
In part thanks to Christianity
which created All Saints day
In a long tradition of borrowing from pagan traditions in order to create new ones
A rebranding that might have been helpful
When locals under church rule still followed old traditions

While the air this time of year is just right
for the most superstitious of holidays
You need not be superstitious to believe in ghosts
We are often visited by ghosts from the past here on the show
Scientists who test their ideas against the Universe,
Long after they have passed
Creature of enormous size
Leaving footprints in our imaginations
Entire branches of humanity that once walked the earth
Entice us with their stories
And tonight a girl, long dead
Will show her face for the first time in centuries

Here at TWIS we would like to wish you all happy TWIS-o-WEEN in the coming week
And hope that any ghosts visiting your home
Don’t stay any longer than another episode of
This Week in Science!

There is a baby crying.
My baby.
He is sick, fever, rash… blisters on his tongue.
His mother is trying to sooth him.
He cannot be appeased.
Will not be calm.
The discomfort is too great.
I would have written a typical disclaimer here
Something topical or sciencey
But I cannot
Thinking is impossible under these conditions
There is a baby crying
My baby
At some point, he will sleep
For how long?
Not long.
But in the moments in which he sleeps
There will be silence
A blanket of peace thrown over the household
We will step cautiously
Open drawers and cabinets with delicate care
Speak in hushed tones
Knowing that there is a baby sleeping
Our baby
Who upon waking
Will again be crying
He will get better
Be his healthy happy self in a few days
But until then… there will be more cries, more tears,
And a least one episode of…

This Week in Science.

The characteristics of violence are empathetic to any cause and the tactics in any conflict are quickly shared by enemies.

It is an agreement of the justified, the righteous, and the vindicated mindsets.
All encouraging conflict,
All escalating destructive actions.

And while no people on earth harbor hatred above safety, wish death upon a perceived enemy above the health of their loved ones, conflict can be placed at any doorstep.

Bombs can fall on homes, schools, and places of worship men with guns will kill civilians, unintentionally or without care.

The justified, the righteous, and the vindicated mindsets condemn the destructive actions of the other and legitimize their own.

The fate of any people depends on the actions of leaders, the mindsets of those in charge, and the tactics they use whether it is to protect the people, or not.

When leaders target the people, their own or those of another nation, when they slaughter the innocent to further a cause they invite reprisal, retaliation, and vengeance upon their people, upon themselves, intentionally and without care.

History is full of examples of how conflicts begin and hard lessons on how they end.

And while the characteristics of violence are empathetic to any cause the characteristics of empathy are not.

And neither is
This Week in Science.

The following program contains dangerous information related to the nature of reality. Within the words, terminologies, and phrases you are likely to encounter here.

Are the tools humans use to separate fiction from fact.
The difference is real.
As different as:
A sci-fi fantasy and actual space exploration,
A children’s story and a study into childhood illness,
Any cultural mythology and every molecule that can cure a disease.

The information is dangerous because the human mind is a collection of fantasy, mythology, and storytelling.
Without them… it is unclear who or what a human being is.

Assumptions, opinions, beliefs, and biases are the underlying conditions blurring the human mind responsible for our unfocused actions and responses.

They are a seductive sedative, a blissful blindfold, a well-intended illusion and they have poisoned men’s souls, barricaded the world with hate,
goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed again and again.

Assumptions, opinions, beliefs, and biases…

What can be seen without them?
What can be learned without them?
What can be done without them?
Is science.

And there is no better place to start seeing the world for what it really is than…
This Week In Science!

Purring Pads

Science is an ever-evolving journey of learning new things

Where we are today,
The knowledge we have gained,
Could not have been predicted 50 years ago.

Where we go next,
The knowledge yet to be discovered,
Can not be predicted today.

At least not specifically,
But generally speaking,
We know exactly where we are headed.

Towards a future of knowing everything,
How things work, how they interact with other things,
And how to enhance or suppress the way those things operate.

It may be difficult to imagine at times,
The things we have yet to learn,
We don’t even have names for them yet.

But in time, as the unknown things are discovered,
The unknown things will be named,
And then we will know what to call them.

In the meantime, we will keep an eye out for new things,
Here on This Week in Science!

Some quick science news!

2023 IgNobel Prize Winners!
