Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it
A plausible yet daunting idea.
For if previous concepts of the past are any indication the story of humanity is a tale of the damned.

Humans have seldom understood the past and the histories passed down through tradition by spoken word or Carved into rock.
Written down on scrolls or Read from books contemplated, debated, and taught in schools are often wrong, misleading, self-serving, and entirely make-it-up.

One element of modern society has attempted to put a halt to the doomed nature of humanity Science.

Through anthropology, archeology, and genetics, the true evidence of human migration Refutes the endless origin stories that have circulated and show that we are but one people with a braided stream of interconnected stories.

Through population studies in medical research and Epidemiology, we trace the paths of pathologies, pointing out the hazards, foretelling the risks, and understanding better how to preserve life based on the missteps of the past.

In geology, the formation of strange features explained,
In astronomy the yearly meanderings of stars reframed,
In physics, the fabric of space and time entwined,
In cosmology the birth of our universe revealed,
In every breakthrough research paper,
An understanding of past knowledge leads to the current discovery.

And while – Those who do not learn history may be doomed to repeat it.

Those who do learn from it are celebrated here on
This Week in Science!s

Over 5 million studies are published each year most cost multiple thousands of dollars to publish, paid for by the researchers or their institutions.

The publication of scientific papers has become a multi-billion-dollar-a-year business where the focus of the industry is on the speed and volume of papers rushed through an often limited peer review process.

There are more Scientific journals than ever before, which is to be expected
But an increase of around 30% over ten years is not.

While the number of highly specialized publications is greater,
the number of papers per publication is also higher
Meanwhile, the number of pages per paper is at an all-time low.

A lot of what is being published may not need to be as a publication is considered necessary for career advancement.
There is often no time to wait for a good subject, hypothesis, or design for an experiment before jumping into the publication waters.

It is happening so often that the waters are getting muddy poorly designed experiments, lackluster research, partially published data, unrelated citations, and a whole-hearted disrespect for the craft of science.

Most of it has very little impact, scientists regularly disregard bad studies usually, by disregarding a publisher’s entire library of publications based on past poor performance. But the pulp fiction age of scientific publications is here and even the once-reliable publications are getting muddy.

Holding the line between what is science and what is clearly career or vanity publishing is a group of people who hold science to a higher standard than any publication that demands good science!

And that is This Week in Science!

Things are rising up on planet Earth!

Atmospheric carbon is rising,
And we wait…
The temperature keeps rising,
And we complain about the weather…
The sea levels are rising,
And we watch…

And while awareness is also rising…
Action is not quite rising to the level that should be expected in an emergency.

Unless the humans have a second habitable planet that they have told no one about…
This will affect all of them.

The worst of global warming is yet to come and the only thing that will stop the temperature rising is you!
Not just you,
But everyone including you,
Rising up and taking control of the situation!

I would do it myself but I’m busy that day…
But you, you have been chosen!
By fate, by destiny, by mere chance, and by dumb luck to be alive in the age of energy consequences.

And you need to rise up to the challenge,
Right after sitting down for another episode of
This Week in Science!

Artificial intelligence is in the news lately with worrisome warnings of a future beyond our control so before anyone panics about our future robot overlords a little context.

AI is nothing more than a collection of computers that can read everything we have ever written on any subject and maybe can learn from it.
What AI does not have is a motive.

AI has no interest in humanity, no will or ideology it seeks to impose, and no desire to change the world or profit off of its people.

Eventually, (if not already) it will be given goals with human motives, and given what we know about humans these goals will likely revolve around lawyers, drugs, and money.

There are archaic forms of artificial intelligence that already operate in the world today corporations, governments, and science are all forms of artificial intelligence.

As these entities seek to incorporate more powerful AI into their operations, what we will see will be nothing new and nothing to be afraid of that there isn’t already a good reason to worry about today.

Corporations have tremendous power over resources and leverage over people, historically showing a lack of concern for human health and well-being outside of their own bottom line this will influence how corporate-motivated AI treats people.

Governments around the world already range from big-brother authoritarian dictatorships to big-brother limited-freedom democracies. Government-motivated AI will reflect this, making any system harder to challenge from within.

And science, which is already awesome, will just get more awesome. As science-motivated AI will accelerate every form of research and give us much to talk about

The following program is provided on an as-is basis as is the culture you are living in, the resources you have access to, and the planet upon which you are spinning.

The current environment you are experiencing should not be considered permanent, and there is no implied expectation or warranty of prolonged habitability on Earth as past climate is no guarantee of future conditions.

While considerable effort is being made to raise awareness and inform the public, any actions taken to prevent cataclysmic climate change should have taken place before this awareness was sought.

The media is not covering the crisis, no government is taking control of the situation, industries are not changing their behavior the problem is getting worse, not better.

Because those with the power to make changes do not have your best interests in mind.

I repeat those in power Do Not have your best interests in mind.

For the past many decades, science has been hot on the heels of various treatments, cures, and therapeutic solutions to a long list of diseases…

Gaining knowledge through observations of correlations, aided by genetic sequencing data, biochemical analysis, and a sustained, dedicated, iterative effort to find solutions.

Most of the time, those solutions remain elusive even to the best of scientific efforts.

Just skim through the concluding statements of research papers over the past many decades
Research into cancer, Alzheimer’s, Autism, Parkinson’s, or stem cells…

What you will find at the end of hundreds of thousands of papers
is a passing of the torch
A hopeful plea to the fates dressed in professional caveats
Something along the lines of…

These findings may provide a pathway for future research to explore further the potential causative nature of correlations observed in our study and suggest that eventually, somebody might stumble upon a key to unlock the door of potential clinical treatments…

This is how science functions,
small steps of definitive knowledge gains,
eventually lead to treatments, techniques, and cures.

Science… is the ultimate long-form story.
This is why we offer it to you in long-form installments of

The first time you thought,
